The purpose of depression

Paul Andrews, an evolutionary psychologist at McMaster University in Canada argues that depression may be “an adaptation for analyzing complex problems.” He sees it in the condition’s bouquet of symptoms, which include “anhedonia,” or an inability to feel much pleasure; people who are depressed ruminate frequently, often in spirals; and they get more REM sleep, a phase associated with memory consolidation. This reflects an evolutionary design, the argument goes, one that’s to, as Hutson summarizes, “pull us away from the normal pursuits of life and focus us on understanding or solving the one underlying problem that triggered the depressive episode.” Like, say, a “failed” relationship. The episode, then, is a sort of altered state, one different from the hum of daily life, one that’s supposed to get you to pay attention to whatever wounding led to the upset. For example, 80 percent of subjects in a 61-person study of depression found that they perceived some benefit from rumination, mostly assessing problems and preventing future mistakes.

Smog hurts the body too

Chinese Smog, just like any other Smog in the world, is so bad, it’s like a ‘nuclear winter’ that’s even stopping plants’ photosynthesis. Scientists argue. They also state the following aspects:

  • Pollution has grounded aircraft, closed roads and hit tourism inChina
  •  The food supply could be affected as the smog blocks sunlight
  • China Agricultural University showed that seedlings are struggling to grow
  • The smog is having the same effect as that predicted from nuclear war
  • YetChina’s naval chief claimed it has a plus side – defence from US laser
  • Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong said weapons’ range cut from 10km to 1km

So smog touches the Body in an implicite way one could say. It touches the Body, interferes without letting you really know what happens and what will happen in the future.

Smog hurts without you letting feel how much it hurts.

Burning desire

To burn with desire and keep quiet about it is the greatest punishment we can bring on ourselves”

Federico Garcia Lorca

The burning desire is radically human. It mirrors the intensive inner energy, which is so to say the utmost emotional need to be expressed. It has to be expressed, whatever intensitiy you will feel.

To be quiet about it means in this sense not to express this desire not at all. to be quiet means to resist to it`s inner dynamics and rhythm. To be quiet means to reduce your life, your vitality, the respect you can have for yourself.

This burning desire keeps us going, keeps us moving out into the world. This burning desire carries and supports our emotions, our inner life. This burning desire structures our mind, our brain, which accompanies us to find orientation.

This burning desire is the essence of our awareness. Awareness of the world around me, the awareness of myself and the awareness of the others around me wo give sense to my life.

Overwhelming, blind discipline, steady and rigid rationality as well as fighting (self-) control are enemies of this burning desire.
