China Day Cologne 2012

Last weekend I visited the China festival in Cologne. The main reason for this event was the 40 th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between China and Germany. As well as the 25 th anniversary of the specific partner relationship between Bejing and Cologne.

On Friday there was the 2nd Business Forum on the communication and cooperation between China and Germany. More than 500 managers and politicians talked together on various issues. This Forum is said te be the most important business event for the Chinese in Germany. I will post some comment within this week on the different behavior patterns of managers from China and Germany, on how …………..

The cosmopolitan Chinese manager

Business is important as base, motor and motivation for intercultural communication and integration. In whatever way. Here is n early study on this process, still worth being read.

“As China emerges as a major player on the international business scene, it is becoming increasing important for Western businesses to understand the work values and behaviors of the people in this large and regionally diverse country. Thus, the focus of this study is to identify work value differences across the 6 regions of China. In the process of developing these comparisons, we identify ……………..

Longing for culture and love – Chinese students in Germany

Friends of mine produced a little film on: How Chinese students live in Germany and experience the new culture which is not at all familiar to them. At the same time the film shows how Chinese students study, work, play and love far away from their home country.

It is a film worth to be seen though it is only about four minutes long.

Chinese Students talk about their daily life. The Chinese students are to be seen in typical scenes with their professor, with colleagues, playing music, enjoying their meals, talking about friendship and love and remembering their homes, their emotional and cultural roots when talking to their mothers via skype.

Being in Germany helps to……….

Silence as dialogue – 默克尔访华:沉默的对话

I know about one big handicape of my blog. It is the language. It took me some time to find my decision, namely to choose English and not German or Chinese or any other language.

English is ranked as world language number One. It is spoken all over the world. But not everybody of course speaks English. And even when someone has learnt English at shool, maybe he or she is not familiar in speaking the language.

This not a problem. Really. You speak the language you like to speak. But how to write in an international blog on intercultural communication? ……………….

Double homesickness

some days ago I by chance visited an open air festival of the German-Indonesian society in Cologne. Delicious meals, nice presents to buy, music, friendly talking people and the chance to have a little neck massage. It was a woman from the isle of Bali who offered the massage. She all about the ancient tradition of Balinese massage so I was glad to have again the chance to get such a good massage.
While doing the massage she talked about her life. She had some children, grand children and grandmother in the age of 93 who lived on Bali.
Whenever the Balines woman was …………

Tea without Milk: impossible

it is not enough to understand the words you have to experience in order to learn

When I visited India for the first time I really enjoyed nature, culture and of course the people. Especially in South-India, where I stayed for quite a long time, I always felt invited when visiting little villages or asking for a cup of tea in some family-house. They served English tea of course, that means strong tea with a lot of milk and sugar. I like English tea, it feels so smooth in the mouth. 😉

I love this sweetness of English tea and was really glad, that this kind of tea would be served within a minute. But one day within a second I felt shocked by the Indian version of the English tea. Of course they served strong tea with milk and sugar, but the milk ………………

American psycho

There are many ways to explore and to understand the culture. I want to make it very simple today looking on the American (US) culture. Of course as ONE example. The journalist Eva Munz says that looking at the most prescribed pharmaceutics will lead to a deep understanding about what the people feel, how they live, how their live is and how they try to survive in their own culture.

Xanax Is the most prescribed medicine against ……………….

Knowing is knowing not to know

When I went to India for the first time 1976 I wanted to explore the country, to get accustomed to the people and the culture. As people in India speak English it was quite easy for me to communicate. By doing this my interest grew to learn more about what happens in society, in politics and in rural life.

By talking I of course also tried to let the other know what my knowledge of …………..
