MAMA-situation

Well language is always also body language. I talked about this already. Remembering Wittgensteins sentence, the German philosopher, language is sounding movement or the sound of movement. And movement is feeling. You know that feeling in English also means emotion.

A lot is written in psychology and psychoanalysis about this. One main concept is the following. I put it into simple sentences, I hope you forgive me for that. 😉

When a child is born it feels ………………….

language is…..sounding movement…

or the sound of movement.

Sprache ist….Laut (laut) gewordene Bewegung.

Following the German philosopher Wttgemstein this means that language derives from movement. Movement is THE charactersiticum of life. If you are dead you cannot move. And when you can move this brings up feelings. Alweays. All this together he says is language.

So the word as part of the language is only ONE part of language. No more. There is also a life impulse, movement, feeling, expression, someone who is aware odf this andsoon.

Tomorrow I will talk about some psychoanalytical concept which leads to the same view. I will call it the Mama-situation or Mama-scene.

Zeit der Halluzinationen or time for halluzination

It is a pity that I don´t translate this little statement of my college Simone Pika into English. To be honest I am a bit too lazy today because of the weather. 😉 Sorry for that.  T make it short, she says that we humans often live in the past or the future. Primates live in the here and now!!! And that is often much better and more successful.

Eine besondere Eigenschaft menschlicher Sprache und menschlicher Kognition ist, dass wir uns in unseren Gesprächen und Gedanken vorwiegend im Gestern und im Morgen bewegen. Kleiner Test: Sie sitzen……..

Primate vocalization, gesture……..

A good friend of mine is an expert in monkey and ape communication. Here are the results of some her studies. It is interesting how important the nonverbal communication is for the social life, for working together and for survival. And there are quite a lot parrellels to human communication. So have a look and get an impression. And enjoy:

“the performance of the language is multimodal, not confined to speech. Review of monkey and ape communication show ………..

The skin is the message 6 – devaluation and shame

This morning I came across a little notice in my newspaper on a research about young people and internet mobbing. The main result of this research is the following: Embarrassing fotos are felt more severe than mockery and ridicule by words. More than half of the surveyed young people who have experience in cyber-mobbing suffer from unauthorized fotos and video clips in the internet, when these fotos or videos are used in a mockery manner. This is also experienced as a deep humiliation and a loss of trust.

In contrast to this, mockery by words, insults and verbal threats are only experienced by 25 % of the young people as deeply embarrassing. One conclusion out of this survey can be the following: people, especially young people, feel more unsecure and helpless thus much more struck on a nonverbal level than on a verbal level. They feel obviously more safe and more resistant on the verbal level than on the body level.

On the other hand they know very well the importance of the nonverbal level. And they operate there in an effectual and convincing way. Convincing here means, in a cruel way. Well, realising this, can bring up the idea to be more careful on the nonverbal level, to be more sensitive by using the body language as an important and direct approach to the other.

I wonder what kind of results there would be in other countries, mainly in China, Japan or so.

Rescuing hug

Nonverbal communication accompanies us from the very beginning. It does not start in the moment of birth. It is some kind of subtile, on-going, very sensibel and convincing interchange between mother and (unborn) child. Sceíentific research proofs this as an overall phenomena in all cultures. It is something which mirrors an important nature of humans. Here is one very interesting example for this.

The article details the first week of life of a set of twins. Apparently each were in their respective incubators and one was not expected to live. A hospital nurse fought against the hospital rules and placed the babies in one incubator. When they were placed together, the healthier of the two, threw an arm over her sister in an endearing embrace. The smaller baby’s heart stabilized and temperature rose to normal.

Scientific research proofs the overal benefit of this kind of bonding, that means the deep influence which direct body contact has on man. One researcher, Mary Whalen, reports the following benefits:

  • Decreased number of apnea problems
  • Improved blood-oxygen levels
  • Increased weight gain
  • Better feeding
  • Greater temperature regulation
  • Decreased agitation
  • Decreased length of hospital stays and likelihood of re-admission

So just have a look if you want to get to know more about.

On Chinese Body Thinking

when you are hungry you eat. when you are tired you sleep. ….what

does you astonish about this perspective? 😉

This book uses Western philosophical tradition to make a case for a form of thinking properly associated with ancient China. The book’s thesis is that Chinese thinking is concrete rather than formal and abstract, and this is gathered in a variety of ways under the symbol “body thinking”. The root of the metaphor is that the human body has a kind of intelligence in its most basic functions. When hungry the body gets food and eats, when tired it sleeps, when amused it laughs. In free people these things happen instinctively but not automatically.
The metaphor of body thinking is extended far …
