Facial expression by itself does not give reliable answers

Facial expression by itself does neither accurately mirrors deeper, extreme emotions nor helps to distinguish accurately deeper extreme positive or negative emotions.

These are some basic results of a new study published in Science from November 2012. Here are some of the most important results regarding the expression of extreme emotions:

  • The facial expression by itself does not give reliable answers
  • Judging such emotions from the facial expression only lead to over estimation………..

Money, money, money – love?

A colleague of mine told me a little story about the love-relationship between a Chinese woman and a German teacher. Both were really in love with each other. As they wanted to celebrate a special anniversary they decided to go to Munich for a weekend-trip. They had a wonderful time there. They both enjoyed the scenery, the walks through the ancient part of town, the delicious meals in various typical Bavarian restaurants and of course felt more in love then before.

The colleague of mine than explained a strange behavior of the Chinese woman. During the day-time when they were in Munich she put down some notes into a little notebook. Notes about what they’ve bought, what they’ve eaten, where they’ve lived and so on. She noted this and counted the specific price, e.g. having dinner, having bought some ice-cream, having bought a new dress and so on. In the evening she summarized all the costs and smiled ……….

The difference is the success

maybe some of you have already heard of this unique old man, calles grandpa. He modells for his granddaughter, who sells women`s clothes in her internet shop. Just after she presented her grandpa modelling her clothes a not understable success began.

Why one may ask?

I think it is a matter of difference and a matter of strangeness, which symbols something which you really did not expect. And when it`s there, you unconsciously feel some kind of a deep commotion. You loose your controlled mixture of awareness and interpretation of life and are surprised in a positive way.

So let yourself be surprised again in your own life and look what happens to your (fixed) controll system. 😉

Mystery of Chinese characters and Kalligraphy

Some weeks ago I by chance visited a little exhibition on Chinese letters and Kalligraphy in my home town. A Chinese who lives in Germany already for many years had organized it in the entrance of the local library. An ideal place I think.

Ideal in so far, as one can see the big difference between the present Western way of writing or printing and the Chinese way of embodying writing as a kind of art. A kind of art which integrates the letter, the haptic, the look and feel of the writing or better to say painting the material and the old tradition with its symbolic and oracle like characters.

If one wants to learn writing Chinese, one has to face these different aspects or layers of meaning. And one has really to let one go into the process of writing.

So learning the language or writing Chinese always is a process of cultural experience.

Yes means No and No means Yes – do you agree?

Last week I talked to a colleague of mine about her study on intercultural differences concerning gestures and facial expression of people from Germany, Korea, Japan and Papua New Guinea. Of course this study caught at once my interest. (I will talk about it later)

Here one interesting little experience. My colleague was talking to a student from Korea, I think. She asked her a question and the student seemed to hesitate a little in answering “Yes”. My colleague responded to this slight hesitation and told the student, not to say “Yes” if she perhaps has another opinion.

The student seemed to be a little relieved, because ………..

Bang Dakuan, or: women who capture rich men

There is a big problem between western countries and China. China copies various products which are protected by law. So western companies fight for their copyright in China. But mostly are not successful.

Up to now this could be identified as a typical intercultural conflict: whereas copyright has become an enormous social, economical and juridical value, copying mirrors a traditional value which is typical for the Chinese culture.

How to solve this ambivalence? How to find a way out of this dilemma? Neither the one nor the other perspective on it´s own is intercultural acceptable.

Well meanwhile reality, the development of facts to which society and life gets accustomed ……………..

A matter of opinion

Psychologists of Bristol University have found out, that there is big and radical gender difference in perception and awareness. (http://www.plosone.org/home.action )

On the one hand women are better aware of little differences than men. On the other hand if watching a person on a photo, men mostly look at the person`s face whereas women also look at the body as a whole.

This of course leads to the impression of big differences in life experience. Both live in the same world, but see different things or aspects of this world.

And of course behave in a different way, present themselves in a different habit.

This difference is quite a stable element of nonverbal communication. So to say a fact which cannot be neglected in it´s important influence on communication. Of course this fact also is a chance to enrich gender communication. By being aware of this fact and integrating the consequences in one´s own behavior. Or by being aware of this and addressing the other in order to reflect both perspectives as two parts of the same coin.
