Imitation in the neonatal phase

Imitation has long been assumed to occur from birth, with influential theories  placing an innate imitation module at the foundation of social cognition (potentially underpinned by a mirror neuron System. Yet, the very phenomenon of neonatal imitation has remained controversial. Empirical support is mixed and interpretations are varied, potentially because previous investigations have relied heavily on cross-sectional designs with relatively small samples and with limited controls. Here, we report surprising results from the most comprehensive longitudinal study of neonatal imitation to date.

Body language and nonverbal communication in China

Just finished the second workshop of the two years training program at the Shanghai Mental Health Center SMHC. Topic was body language, nonverbal communication and body diagnostics for psychotherapists and physicians.

I also had a two days workshop on the same topic at Tongji University and at New Health in Beijing. A lecture at Beijing Normal University.

All in all impressing how big the interest is in these topics and how motivated the participants were. It mirrors some track in the field of psychology and psychotherapy in China which opens up a forth coming future of great competence.

The Most Popular Words Used on Social Media

There is an amazing project forging scientific techniques by measuring psychological well-being and physical health based on the analysis of language in social media. Different perspectives were observed like:

Females from this study (Top), used more emotion words (e.g., excited) and first-person singulars and they mention more psychological and social processes (e.g., ‘love you’ and ‘<3’ –a heart)

Males used more swear words and object references (e.g., ‘xbox’, ‘black ops’, ‘wishes he’).

other perspectives were : Age, personality and so on. Just have a look.

Where we like to be touched, and where we don’t

The closer the person in social relationship, the larger the body area this person is allowed to touch. The bodily maps of touch were similar in all five cultures studied. Social touching thus seems to be a biologically determined and evolutionarily developed way to form social relationships. The results were recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy.

It is really worth looking into the recent study conducted by Aalto University and the University of Oxford. It shows that the human body has a precisely defined touch maps that are tightly linked to social touch that is allowed in different kinds of human relationships. It is also said that this is relevant to many or even all cultures.

Please have a look and talk it over with your friends. 🙂

Holding environment

A holding environment’ is described as the ideal mandala in which growth and development could occur, weaved of the qualities of contact and space. Through making attuned, present-time, somatically-engaged contact with another as they are – and by providing an open, warm sanctuary in which their experience can unfold and illuminate – we become vehicles of love in Action.
